Before renting a car for gig work: four things to confirm
Groundwork Rental · September 7, 2026
A car can look suitable for gig work without being approved for the service you want to use. Before paying for a rental, check four separate things: the rental arrangement, the vehicle, the driver, and the insurance. An accepted make or model does not settle the other questions.
1. Check the rental arrangement
Uber states that rental vehicles may only be used through an approved partnership. Lyft’s Florida requirements state that rentals must come through its Express Drive program. These are restrictions on the rental arrangement, not just the car’s age. Groundwork Rental is not claiming to be an approved Uber or Lyft rental partner.
See the current official guidance from Uber on rental cars and Lyft’s Florida driver requirements. Reviewed September 7, 2026; check again before making a commitment.
2. Confirm the exact vehicle
Ask about the specific car, not just a representative photo. The model year, configuration, title history, condition, and market can matter. Do not assume that a vehicle accepted in one city or for one type of work is accepted everywhere.
3. Confirm your own approval
Vehicle eligibility does not approve a driver’s account. Resolve your own application, document, or account issues directly with the platform. Avoid spending money on a rental based only on an expectation that account approval will follow.
4. Confirm permitted use and coverage
Describe exactly how the car will be used to both the rental provider and the insurer. Passenger trips, delivery work, and personal travel are different uses. Ask for clear written terms that apply to your situation; a screenshot of an active account does not establish rental permission or insurance coverage.
